Here Comes the Bride…What Will You Be Wearing?

Wedding season is definitely upon us and outdoor weddings are more popular than ever this year. I have attended three weddings so far this season and I still have four more to attend this summer. At the last wedding I took a look around to see what everyone was wearing and for a moment I thought that I was at the Kentucky Derby. There were women in hats, men in seersucker suits and the only thing missing were the Mint Juleps (well that and my $50 bet).

I always struggle a little when it comes to wedding wear and wonder what is the proper etiquette when it comes to attire for the nuptials. There are so many unwritten rules and I usually try to follow them but shopping for wedding attire is more than a little stressful. I always envy my husband (just a little) because his biggest choice is what color tie to wear. Here are some guidelines to abide by for attending summer weddings:

-Don’t wear white or ivory as you may upstage the bride.

-Don’t wear the same color as the wedding party if you can help it or you may get a job of handing out programs. Seriously though, try to avoid the wedding colors but if it cannot be helped, then don’t worry.

-Let the invitation be your guide. Some will say formal attire required and others may state buffet and dancing after the ceremony.

-Black is perfect for weddings. Black is chic, slimming and much easier to recycle later in the season into another wedding outfit. Try to save black for the evening weddings or you may roast under the sun.

-Modesty is key; nothing too short or too revealing.

-Don’t be afraid to try prints or floral patterns (nothing too bold as to be a topic of conversation). Pastels or neutral colors will work well also.

-Consider layers that can take you from day to evening. A loose, flowing shrug, wrap or shawl can make a strapless dress instantly look a little more formal. Take it off for dancing. You can wear a longer dress for more formal weddings but think knee length for all others.

-Keep makeup to a minimum (you will melt outside with heavy makeup) and shoot for the glowing, bronzed look.

-Look for fabrics that flow and are not clingy. You will be more comfortable and not as hot.

-No matter what anyone tells you, always skip the rhinestones and sequins for any wedding. Unless, of course, you are with the band.

-Limit the accessories or jewelry. A woman sweating (we call it misting right?) outdoors while wearing a big, chunky necklace and bracelet is no picnic and can become very uncomfortable.

-Bring an extra pair of shoes. My feet always tire out long before I do. I started bringing an extra pair of shoes years ago and my feet are always much happier. After all, everyone has already had a chance to see me in my smashing, strappy Christian Louboutin heels so why not take it easy on my feet?

-Don’t forget the sunscreen. The sun can be brutal and sitting for an hour unprotected can make for an uncomfortable reception.

The key to dressing successfully for a summer wedding is to find a happy medium between comfort and glamour. Make certain that you are comfortable but appropriately dressed. You can never go wrong with a strapless dress, a clutch and a pair of strappy heels. Formal or informal, you will fit right in. Add a smile, practice saying, “Isn’t she beautiful?” or “It is so nice to meet you” about one hundred times and you are ready to go. Don’t forget the gift!
