Teaching Kids How to Use Manners at Special Events

Many times, parents hire a babysitter for the smaller children when needing to attend a wedding but there are times when parents have no option but to bring the children along.  Obviously, it is important to find activities that will keep the kids under control so the wedding is not disrupted.  If you find yourself in this situation, we suggest you consider the following solutions to help.

You might talk to the bride or groom, asking if there are other parents in the same situation.  If so, offer to spearhead the coordination of hiring a sitter or two who would come to the church and care for the children in a room away from the chapel.  Typically, parents would be willing to go in on the price, allowing them to enjoy the wedding while knowing the kids are being properly cared for.  Since the sitter would be providing services outside the home, make sure you bring puzzles, games, toys, and even snacks to make the time more enjoyable for the children.

If you will not have the option of using a sitter at the church and the only way you can attend the wedding is by bringing the kids with you, make sure you are seated as near to the back of the church as possible.  Then, bring small and non-messy snacks for the kids such as cereal or crackers.  Additionally, a coloring book and crayons, stuffed animals, or other quiet toys will usually suffice.

You should also consider bringing a small blanket that could be placed on the floor where the children can stretch out.  Even their clothing is an important factor in that you want them to be comfortable.  If you have younger toddlers, make sure they have had a nap and non-sugary foods prior to the wedding.  For a small baby, if possible, keep the baby awake until you reach the church so he or she will sleep.  Of course, parents also need to talk with the children, letting them know what is and is not allowed during the wedding but of course, sitting near or at the back will give you a quick out if needed.
