Why You Should Learn to Relax
Do you cringe when loved ones or co-workers implore you to “just relax” when things are not going according to plan? They might be giving you heartfelt advice, but for people who are prone to stress and anxiety those two words can further elevate their blood pressure.
The next time you feel your stress level rise consider the following reasons why relaxing can help improve your health:
Practicing relaxation techniques, whether it’s yoga, deep breathing or another form of physical activity you will slow your heart rate, lower your blood pressure, slow your breathing rate, reduce your need for oxygen, reduce muscle tension and increase the blood flow to major muscles.
In addition, doctors maintain that if you make relaxation a part of your daily routine you will benefit in the long term. For example, studies show that individuals who practice daily relaxation techniques suffer from fewer ailments such as headaches and back pain. Those same people also have more energy and experience improved concentration. Research also found that people who make time to relax for at least 15 minutes per day have a greater ability to handle problems, suffer from less frustration and are more efficient in their daily tasks.

Some relaxation techniques are more familiar than others and some take more time to master than others. Some of the most popular relaxation techniques include yoga, Tai Chi, exercise (such as running, aerobics, biking, or swimming), meditation, hypnosis and massage. Other activities that some people consider relaxing include reading, listening to or playing their own music, soaking in a warm tub, painting and gardening.
Choose an activity that brings peace to your life and participate in it at a time and in place where you will have the fewest distractions. And remember, you don’t have to escape to the great outdoors to relax. A dimly lit room in a quiet section of your office building or home can make for an ideal meditation space.
