Military Support

With so many of our military men and women serving time in Iraq and other foreign countries, there is a growing need for people to show appreciation.  You will find a large number of websites that are asking for help in a variety of different capacities.  Simply go to Google.com or some other search engine and type in words such as “write to military personnel”, “adopt a soldier”, or “volunteer in support of the military”.  In return for your search, you will find some incredible sites needing people just like you.

Often, military support will include joining a group of other volunteers who gather information from specific troops needing everyday items that we all take for granted.  This might include bars of soap, razors, books, crackers, cookies, socks, batteries, and the list goes on.  Together, the team will find sales or even work with local retailers asking for donations that can then be packaged and shipped out.

During the holidays, many of the men and women serving our country are far from home and would love nothing more than a Christmas card or a box of homemade cookies.  Again, there are many sites that allow people to adopt a soldier, someone they can connect with and actually build a friendship with.  As the two of you correspond, you will find out the types of things that would make his or her life more enjoyable during the holiday season.

Other websites are designed a little different by providing open forums where people can post messages to soldiers in every branch of the military.  Since military people can usually log onto a computer at some point in time, they know about these sites too and will visit just to read the notes of encouragement and support.  This type of giving back makes the hot and cold days, covered in dirt, and eating food that is nothing like mom makes far easier to handle.

We owe it to our military men and women and to our country to do things in support.  Most of the efforts are free and if there is any cost, it is either minimal or covered by a non-profit organization.  Therefore, when you want to do something good by giving back your time, effort, and money, we strongly suggest you consider the military because they need it.
