Donating Prom Dresses

Whether you remember your prom as the best night of your life or memories of the night make you giggle over the silliness, there is one thing you can’t deny – the prom is all about the dress. For many of us it was the first time we attended a “grown up” function in a grown up’s dress, and it’s something we will remember forever.

Sadly, with the costs of everything going up, more and more teenagers find themselves unable to attend the prom. The cost of the dress and accessories alone can keep teens at home on that special night. That’s where you come in. If you still have your prom dresses or one of your children’s hanging in good condition in the closet, consider donating it to a charity that helps create a magical night for needy young women. Bridesmaid’s dresses work, too, and most of us have at least one of those collecting dust in our closets.

There are a number of places to donate prom dresses, special occasion dresses, and accessories. Start your search at DonateMyDress.org. This is a national campaign that encourages teens to donate their old dresses, and provides resources for young women in need to find a dress. Their website contains a state-by-state listing of places to donate prom and special occasion dresses.

The Princess Project is one places which accepts donations of your old prom dresses. The Princess Project started in 2002 when one young woman was in need of a dress, and many women answered the call. Since its inception, the Princess Project has provided prom dresses to over 5,000 young women who would not otherwise made it to their prom. The Princess Project accepts donations of stylish dresses of all sizes as long as they are in good condition between January and March of each year. Follow the guidelines on their website if you would like to donate your dress to help make a young woman’s dream come true.
