I've been homeschooling for about 5 years now. I have three kids, who are currently in 4th, 1st and Pre-K. We're pretty ecclectic, though we veer more toward the unschooling side of the spectrum. For our "outside" classes (ones I don't teach per se) enjoy Lego Robotics, voice, Spanish, chess, dance, and PE). We live in CA.

I'd love hearing more about your homeschool journey!

Hello.

I have five kids. Two of them are teenagers and have always attended public school and my six year old started kindergarten this past school year in public school. He is the middle child of the five and when things get hectic or noisy he just steps back and blends into the room. He started doing this in school. There were 24 kids in his class and his teacher couldn't get him to answer any questions.

He started picking up every sickness in school and finally he was going to school for two weeks and then off one week sick. After my two year old twins developed pneumonia and ended up in the hospital I decided I would home school him for the remainder of the year.

I followed a schedule but I was always flexible on it. I quickly learned that everything in life was a lesson and I wanted him to learn that too. He started asking questions and building up his confidence in everything he done.

We successfully completed the year and I kept a portfolio because where I live if you don't have your child take a test to score their knowledge you had to have a portfolio viewed by a teacher.

I like your theory of teaching. I would say that your children learn quickly that way too. The only reason I followed the course that I did is because I didn't know alot about the homeschool and I was afraid that I would do something wrong.

I have learned to be my son's advocate when it comes to education and I know what he needs more than a teacher who meets the demands of twenty three other children.

We're at the very beginning. As I shared in another post, we felt DS' academic needs would be served best through homeschooling. Because he's also in childcare 20 hours a week - we're still working out kinks! - my aim for him is very low-key. We're doing basic math and science as well as working on improving his reading. We're also learning Spanish, which he seems to enjoy and pick up pretty easily.

I think we'd be classified as eclectic, but I'm not sure we fit any specific model.
