When the weather is cold we may not spend as much time outdoors with our pet as we do in the summer months. What types of activities do you do with your pet in the winter to keep them active?

Life With a Deaf Pet

A month ago we welcomed a new member into our family - a puppy! My 10 year old son was so excited to have him and wanted to start teaching him to sit, fetch a ball, and basically be his best companion. Within a few days we noticed something was wrong. Our new puppy didn't acknowledge us when we called him. After a quick internet seach we did a few tests and realized that he may be deaf. After a visit to our vet our concerns were confirmed that our puppy was deaf. At first my son was very disappointed because he thought this meant that his puppy could never do the things that others do. However, our vet assured us that with proper training with hand signals instead of verbal signals our dog would be just fine and would do the things that other dogs do. We have already taught him to sit on command and playing fetch with my son is his favorite game. The biggest worry that we have is that he can never be left outside unattended. This is because if he wanders off he can't hear us when we call him back. So we make sure that he is always on the leash and someone is with him.

I am interested to hear stories from any other forum members about their special pets and if you have any tips for training especially if you have a pet that is deaf.

Doggles

Our German Shepherd has developed an eye condition which requires regular drops and limited exposure to sunshine unless we want to risk her going blind. Our vet recommended Doggles (Doggy sunglasses) for when she goes outdoors. Our dogs are like our children so I finally broke down and bought the doggles. Has anyone else used these or known someone who used them? I'm really afraid she'll pull them off as soon as I let her out.
