Selecting a Scary Movie
Whether it’s blood and guts, vampires, devils or spiders that freak you out the following movie picks are ideal to get your scream on just in time for Halloween.
“Arachnophobia”
One eight-legged creature might not make you break out in a cold sweat but try being surrounded by 800 of them. John Goodman used a blowtorch to scare them into submission, but it wasn’t easy especially when some of the big ones flew through the air when provoked. This 1990 sleeper was more creepy than spooky, but is still worth watching.
“Rosemary’s Baby”
This 1968 classic directed by Roman Polanski has all the trappings of a scream-a-minute thriller. Rosemary (played Mia Farrow) has a ton of issues not the least of which is the fact that she insists she’s been raped by Satan. Then, there are the movie’s real demons, including uncaring doctors, pesky neighbors and the devil personified--her husband played John Cassavetes.
“Salem’s Lot”
If vampires give you the chills then be prepared to grab some extra blankets while watching this flick. The 1979 movie based on a popular Stephen King story shows you what happens when a vampire moves into town. (Think “dead” bodies scratching at bedroom windows.)

“The Devil’s Backbone”
This 2001 scary movie tells the tale of a young boy secluded in a haunted orphanage during the Spanish Civil War. To say the film is dark is an understatement. The human drama portrayed in this frightening flick makes ghosts look friendly.
“War of the Worlds”
Who could forget this 1953 sci-fi classic? It consistantly ranks up there with the best of the best (or in this case the scary of the scariest) movies of all time. The film was based loosely on H.G. Wells’s classic cautionary tale, which follows the world’s failed efforts to avoid an ailen invasion from Mars. The movie offers plenty of thrills and chills, but the most frightening scene comes during an encouter with a Martian in the abandoned farm house
