A New Museum

Just a few months ago, San Diego’s New Children’s Museum unveiled its new home in the downtown Marina district. The three-story facility, a 50,000-sq.-ft. “green” building made of recycled materials, is equipped with solar-powered electricity, tons of natural light, an impressive concrete entrance bridge, water-saving devices and more. Inside, the exhibits and programs encourage kids (and parents) to interact with the works and create their own: the “Bubble Fountain,” for example, lets kids design their own bubble-making devices, and the “Obsolete Vehicle” is a 1973 Volkswagen Bug that serves as a canvas for little artists. Currently on exhibit is “childsplay,” a collection of various pieces from 19 different artists. All the works were inspired by artist Allan Kaprow, whose installation and performance art have graced the museum in the past; like Kaprow’s works, pieces in the new collection encourage visitors to find art in everyday life. After perusing the exhibit, visitors can stop at an in-house café that serves organic fare, or head to the neighboring public park for a great post-museum visit.
