Selling Your Handmade Items at Craft Fairs

I previously wrote about selling your craft items online. But you have a second option; craft fairs. You could sell your hand made goodies at craft fairs in your area. These are typically popular around the holidays and many churches and community centers host craft fairs. When I was younger I went and helped my Mom at many craft fairs over the years and learned a few things from those experiences.

You usually have to pay a (small) fee to have a table in the craft fair and then you are free to sell your handmade goods for the duration of the craft fair. Craft fairs can often be fun and are a good way to meet local crafters and possibly find out about upcoming craft fairs or opportunities in your area that veteran crafters may be able to share.

The downside to craft fairs is that you have nothing to do with the advertising of the craft fair so if the organization hosting it hasn’t advertised well. You may not get many shoppers, thus making the money you put into being in the craft fair not worth your time.

If the craft fair is outdoors, you also have to worry about weather such as rain, extreme heat, or wind. You’ll want to protect your products so you may want to look into purchasing or renting a canopy to cover your space with. Be sure and check with the people in charge of the craft fair first though as each one has different rules.
