Crafts with Old Glass Bottles

Years ago, you would take glass bottles back to the store and in return, be given anywhere from five to 20 cents.  While there are still a few states where glass bottles can be returned for money, most often the bottles are either discarded in the trash or recycled.  However, if you want to make some unique creations, consider using your glass bottles instead of tossing them out.  Keep in mind, glass bottles could be anything from soda to liquor to body wash, and so on.

Of course, the first thing you want is to wash the bottles out and then allow them to air dry completely.  Then, consider the many possibilities.  For instance, rather than spend good money on an unusual style of glass vase, consider using a glass bottle.  If you like, you could paint the outside or wrap it with paper or fabric.  From there, the level of embellishment depends on how plain or fancy you want the bottle to be.  Simply fill the bottle with water for fresh flowers or you could add good soil to the bottom and using a thin straw, gently embed a plant into the soil.

Another popular use for glass bottles is to create your own flavor of oil or vinegar for cooking.  You will find a wide selection of recipes online, choosing what appeals to you most.  For instance, if you like spicy foods, then you could use a glass bottle for oil, adding in red peppers.  Other popular ingredients include sage, thyme, and other spices, as well as fruits.  Not only do these oils and vinegar flavors enhance food, they also look beautiful displayed.

You will also find that glass bottles can often be fitted with plastic caps that can then be punched with holes for salt and pepper shakers.  For instance, Corona beer has become a top choice in making salt and pepper shakers.  Check with your local hobby store to find a cap that will fit securely.  For the sale, poke several holes in the top and for the pepper, only a few.  People will love the idea, which is unique and fun.  Bottles come in so many different sizes, colors, and shapes that the possibilities are limited only to your imagination and creativity.
